FOOD LOSS
AND WASTE

Indonesia is estimated to generate 13 million tons of food waste annually. Indonesia's stockpile of food loss and food waste in 2000-2019 is 23-48 million tons/year equivalent to 115-184 kg/capita/year. The study found that more than 30% of waste in Indonesia comes from food and fish waste is one of them.

In Indonesia, fish is an important source of protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. They are cheap and easy to find in markets in coastal areas, but they spoil easily before reaching customers living inland, affordability can also be a barrier for poor households.

Unfortunately, too much waste is lost from fish production. Therefore, GAIN Indonesia encourages ways to prevent fish loss from the process of catching and cultivating, to supply and consumption chains. Even though Indonesia has vast marine resources that have a competitive advantage to increase economic income, almost 40% of fish harvests are lost and wasted due to poor fisheries management.
