Meskipun sumber daya perairan melimpah, konsumsi ikan per kapita tetap lebih rendah daripada di negara-negara tetangga. Faktor-faktor seperti penangkapan ikan berlebihan, polusi, dan praktik budidaya perikanan yang tidak berkelanjutan membatasi pertumbuhan, sementara perubahan iklim menimbulkan ancaman tambahan bagi stok ikan.<br>Makalah ini menekankan pentingnya spesies ikan kecil dalam mengatasi tantangan gizi dan lingkungan di Indonesia. Seringkali diabaikan demi spesies yang lebih besar, ikan kecil sangat bergizi, menyediakan protein, asam lemak omega-3, vitamin, dan mineral. Mengonsumsi ikan kecil secara utuh juga mendorong praktik tanpa limbah. Makalah ini menilai tujuh jenis ikan kecil dan melakukan analisis rantai pasokan tiga jenis ikan, termasuk praktik budidaya perikanan skala kecil dan perjalanan dari sumber hingga distribusi.
